    WHY IS ENVIRONMENT SO IMPORTANT

Environment plays an important role in healthy living and existence of life on planet earth.

-Earth is a home for different living species and we all are dependent on environment for

-Environment plays an important role in the healthy living of human beings. it matters because ITS ONLY HOME THAT HUMANS HAVE, AND PROVIDES air, food and other needs.

-Humanity's entire life support system depends on the well -being of all environment

    CHARACTERISTICS OF ENVIROMENT

-A person's environment includes at least the following components:

    .water

    .food

    .X rays

    .ultraviolet radiation

    .visible light heat

    .life-style

    .pharmaceuticals and healthy maintenance.

    IMPORTANT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

-Air pollution . While air quality has improved greatly in last 50 years, still remains an issue in many major cities with large population...

-Deforestation. Each year, the U.S . population grows by more than 1,700,000 peoples..

    -Global warming...

    -Water pollution

    -Natural resource depletion

TYPE OF ENVIROMENT DO WE LIVE IN?

-Most human habitats are in the same sorts of place as animals habitats, like

FORESTS AND GRASSLANDS, but humans and animals live in a very different kinds

of shelter. Both humans and animals needs shelter for survive, but what humans thinks of as

their shelter and home is very different from what animals think of as home.

HOW DO WE DEPEND ON THE ENVIRONMENT?

In order to obtain the ESSENTIAL RESOURCE FOR THEIR SURVIVAL, humans depend on the

environment. food, drinking water, fiber for clothing, timber, coal and natural gas are some

of major resource. human also utilize different aspects of environment to develop their civilization.

    WHAT MAKES AN ENVIRONMENT HEALTHY:

cleaning air, stables climate, adequate water, sanitation

and hygiene, safe use of chemicals, protection from radiation,

healthy and safe workplaces, sound agriculture practices, healthy-supportive cities

and built environments, and a preserved nature all preserved nature are

    all prerequisites for health.

    ROLES OF HUMAN IN ENVIRONMENT?

Human needs to interact with the environment to obtain our food, water, fuels, medicine,

building materials and many other things.

Advances in science and technology have helped us to exploit the environment for our

benefits, but we have also introduced pollution and caused environmental damage.

stop littering our beaches with plastics

I DONT' LIKE IT 9-YEAR-OLD GIRL URGUES KENYANS TO STOP LITTERING BEACHES.

-Karen Kimani has urgued kenyans to stop littering beaches.

.Karen Kimani, a 9-year-old-girl conservationist whose family visted the coast during the christmas festivities, has expressed her displeasure at the current state of public beaches. in a video that has been going round on social media, the girl stated that there were too many plastics bottles at the beach and called for responsible behavior from Kenyans.

' i went to the beach with my family and we saw plastic all over...i do not like what they (some kenyans) are doing said Kimani. she acknowledged the government's effort in planting trees but stressed the importance of having clean beaches as well. they are planting trees which is a good thing but they should also pay attention to beaches and stop littering'; said Kimani.

Kimani further added that plastics waste poses a threat to marine life and has far-reaching consequences. 'the fish can eat the plastic and die', she said according to her father Henry Kimani, Karen has been passiaonate about the environmental since she was five and has been researching on how to make the world a better place via an initiative dubbed 3Rs which focuses on reducing, reusing and recycling plastic. she currently the minister for Environment at her school, Harvest view academy in Embakasi, and has been working closely with environmental CS Keriako Tobiko.

she also models and her work mainly focuses on improving the environment via different initiatives including tree planting and recycling', said Kimani

in 2019 she represented kenya in the Little Miss and Mr United World in Tenerife, Spain. during her debt walk down the runway, her plastics bottle-themed outfit and monologue on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling (3R) plastics won her silver award.

Karen Kimani vows to continue Wangari Maathai' legacy

Karen Wanjiru Kimani, a six-year-old model and environmentalist is set to represent

Kenya in the little miss world event in Spain.

RAISING A YOUNG ACHIEVER IS NO MEAN FEAT

It took a week for Karen Wanjiru Kimani to design and put together an outfit made out of re-usable carrier bags. For days, the then five-year-old

would forgo playing with other children and instead stay in the house cutting and meticulously joining fabric during the August holidays last year. Two months later, she would strut on a runway, showcasing her ecofriendly outfit as part of little Miss Kenya modelling contest. her effort paid off as she emerged winner in the environment category.

At six years, wanjiru has exhibited great interest in environmental conservation and prowess in modelling.

The young girl, who has been running an innovation eco-project on reducing, reusing and recycling [3Rs] waste is set to represent the country LITTLE MISS WORLD FESTIVAL in SPAIN this october.

I would like people to know that when they do not properly dispose of waste, it will eventually end up in our rivers. this will hurt aquatic life, such as fish, she says her mother, ANN NJERI, says seeing her daughter's enthusiasm in pursuing her talents gives her an overwhelming sense of pride. She has been supportive of her daughter's interests and encouraged her to pursue them. Njeri says being there for her talented daughter has taken a huge amount of sacrifice and hard-work.

The mother of three noticed that her lastborn child showed great creativity when posing for photographs. 'She effortlessly posed well for photos. some people who come across her photo on social media throught she had been trained to do the same, says Njeri the young girl was also keen in keeping the environment clean. Wanjiru was conscious about properly disposing waste. After eating, she would tidy up. she would get worked up if her elder brother and sister littered the house or carelessly waste away, Njeri adds.

    EXPENSIVE JOURNEY

She remembers how excited she was to see her daughter's interest in modelling. as a young girl, i had dreamit of either becoming an air hostess or a model. unfortunately, i ended up giving up on these dreams since my parents could not afford to enroll me for further education to pursue these courses she recalls.

    we paid sh 5000 to enroll her for modelling classes. commuting every weekend and buying her outfits were other additional costs;

ts in the international pageant that will have participants from over 30 countries, the financial demand have become more. to take part in the competition Wanjiru requires about sh600,000 cost including, air travel, visa process and accomodation.the amount is to be footed by her parents and not the conveners of the event.

    ALL-ROUNDED

Meanwhile, Njeri recognises she has to be deliberate about helping her daughter balance between her talents and her studies

fortunately for Wanjiru, most of modelling practice is done during weekends and holidays, thus it does not interfere with her studies.

as for her eco-griendly projects, she does it as part of class activities in school. Njeri's priority is to raise a healthy and all rounded child by encouraging her to pursue her interests and remainding her to enjoy her childhood. She works together with Wanjiru to set goals. this includes setting time for her modelling practice or deciding what to do for eco-friendly projects. Once the goal are set, the parents' role shift to helping her archive these goals by proving what she needs and holding her to account. As days draw close to the Spain contest, Njeri is worried that her and Wanjiru's father, a counsellor, maynot raise the hefty amount on their own and that their daughter's dream of respresnting the country in the international pageant may be short-lived.. she appeals for finacial support from the public adding that, when Wanjiru goes and flies the Kenyan Flag, it will be a moment of pride for not only her, but for the entire country.

.water pollution reduces the ability of the body of water to provide the ecosystem service that it would otherwise provide

-water bodies can be pollutted by a wide variety of substance, including

    .pathogenic microorganisms

    .putrescible organic waste

    .fertilizers and plant nutrients

    .toxic chemicals

    .sediments

    .heat

    TYPES OF SURFACE WATER POLLUTION

POLLUTION OF RIVERS , LAKES AND OCEANS

Surface water pollution of rivers, lakes and oceans. A subset of surfaces water pollution is marine

pollution which affects the oceans. Nutrient pollution refers to contaminating by excessive inputs of nutrients.

Globally, about 4.5 billion people do not have safely managed sanitation as of 2017, according to an estimated by joint monitoring programme

for Water Supply and sanitation . lack of access to sanitation is concerning and often leads to water pollution, eg. via a practice

of open defection: during rain events or floods, human feces are moved from the ground where they were deposited into surface water. simple pit latrines may also ring rain events.

    MARINE POLLUTION

Marine pollution occurs when substances used or spread by humans, such as industrial, agricultural and residential waste, praticles, noise, excess carbon dioxide or invasive organisms enter ocean and cause harmful effects there. the major of this waste [80%] comes from land-based activity, although marine transportation significantly contributes as well

WITH KEFRI AND OTHER LOCAL LEADER'S

when i won the best eco project award in Spain in 2018, i was excited and wanted to do more for the environment. On my return to Kenya, i was hungry to bring change. it didn't matter how small. i had learnt alot in Spain regarding environmental conservation. My parents tell me that i have been passionate about my environment since i was 4 years. that is a long time for me to remember. i am a model and an environmentalist. i have many titles under my name. Little Miss Kenya 2018, Princess of Africa 2019, little Miss United World 2019, runners upGreenkids award 2021. i am the youngest ever environment minister to be elected in our school, Harvest View Academy. I am also the international brand ambassador for Team Environment kenya.

    when covid hit in 2020

I spent most of time indoors, since the schools were closed. i spent this time wiisely by loooking after my kitchen garden. My mumis mum is my witness that on several occasion, she did not buy coriander and onions. she got them from my garden (she is yet to pay me for that 2 years on )

Apart from kitchen garden, i worked with Team Environment kenya. We plantend trees across Kenya. from Busia to Muranga' Kisumu to Nairobi, Nandi among many others. i encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle.

it is this time i realize we had shortage of tress seedlings in the country. we would go for a long distance to get them. i discussed with my parent my idea of having my own tree nursery. Karyn Forte Environmental conservation was born as a result. i am the director of the project. i have the capacity to grow thirty thousand trees at this site. we currently have three thousand seedlings of mixed species. i want to thank NETFUND Kenya for support. i also want to thank KEFRI for educating my team on tree growing. much appreciation to the CS environment honourable Keraiko Tobiko for his encouragement. Also much thank you to NEEMA Kenya, together we can make this country breath again. A big thank you to my school Harvest View Academy, you have really helped me in this journey.

last but not least, thank you Team Environment Kenya and my parents

    thank you.
